This trip is part of my 10-days-trip to Flores. This is the second type of the journey : islands hopping in Komodo National Park.

The first journey is Flores overland. The overland ended in Labuan Bajo, and we spent a night in the town.

Day #1 (of island hopping, day #5 of total journey):

We start the day at 8 am at the harbor to explore Komodo National Park with Sailing Komodo boat. Each day, we visit 2 islands and spend the night living on board at the 2nd island.

First island is Rinca island; a small island near Komodo island. The island is famous for Komodo dragons, giant lizards that can measure up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) long. Being less known and less visited than Komodo, it is a good place to see the Komodo dragon in its natural environment with fewer people to disturb them.

Treks on Rinca Island start from the ticket office at Loh Buaya. You have option of three trails. The shortest trek takes 30 minutes; an easy, shaded walk that passes an artificial waterhole before ascending to a small hill with a view over the bay. The one-hour medium trek winds between dragon nests and out into the sunshine across an exposed savannah that is studded with lontar palms. For the best opportunity to see dragons and their prey, choose the two-hour trek past a permanent waterhole and across steep, exposed slopes that offer breathtaking views.
Our second destination is Padar island.

Padar Island is the third largest island in the Komodo National Park. It is located between Komodo and Rinca Island.

In the past, Padar was one of the island in Komodo where there were dragons live. Along with the illegal hunting activities by human being, they are slowly disappeared and almost unable to see them anymore, even once. It because of they died due to prolonged hunger or they  migrated to nearest island, Rinca.

The island is one of the best spot for trekking and taking spectacular photos for your instagram. This is a MUST VISIT island in the Park. Both sunrise and sunset from this island is amazing.
Day #2:

Sailing from Padar to the main island in the Park, Komodo island. Komodo island is the island where you can see Komodo dragon. the same with Rinca, you have 3 options of trail for trekking.

Another attraction of this island is the Pink beach; a beach with pink sands. You can just chilling on the beach or jump in to the water and snorkel to enjoy the beauty of coral garden under the sea with beautiful fishes playing between the corals.

After having a lot of fun at Pink beach, we moved to the next island while having lunch on board. The 4th island is Gili Lawa Darat island.
On the way to the island, we passed by the Manta point; where usually manta fish can be found. We were unlucky, the undercurrent was strong so we can’t dive for an up close and personal meeting with the manta fish.

Gili Lawa Darat is another heaven for taking a great picture! Enjoying the sunset from the top of the hill was a breathtaking moment. Facing to the west, you can see the Sanghiang island, an active volcano island where the sun goes down, and down at the bottom of the island, long white sandy beach with clear coral formation.

With the sun went down, we spent another night on board.
Day #3:

The 5th island; Kanawa island; a small beautiful tropical island, fully surrounded by white sandy beaches and coral reefs. they have resort but from what I saw, it was not well taking care. For me, this is the most unattractive island between the six island in this trip. We only stop by to take white dress code picture.

Sailing to the last island, Kelor island.
Like other visited islands, we trek to the top of the hill and enjoy the beautiful view from there. Kelor also has a beautiful view, but not as amazing as Padar and Gili Lawa Darat. it was a great closure for the whole trip. We spent a moment to enjoy the fresh water before we hit the ocean back to Labuan Bajo.

Here is a video of the island hopping journey in Komodo National Park:

Arrived in Labuan Bajo, we spent 1 night as recovery night after a long journey; overland trip from Ende to Labuan Bajo and sailing to 6 islands for trekking and snorkeling hehehe…

We move to Bali on the next day. Well, I don’t have to write about Bali because it just a transit for relaxing before we back to reality… Jakarta and its busy road!

This 10-days-trip is a super memorable trip!

Some tips:

  • Bring at least 1 dry fit shirt
  • Be colorful! Since you only need super thin and minimalist outfit, make sure you bring as much color as possible hehehe
  • You will need a trekking shoe or at least a comfortable sport shoes
  • SUNBLOCK is a must! Or if you wanna get tanned, suntanned oil also a must
  • Make sure you have camera or at least mobile phone with good quality built-in cam and gorpo/xiaomi yi cam to capture all the memories!
  • Last but not least, don’t forget to enjoy every moment during the trip!

Cheers,
